What
is a speaker? In technical terms, a speaker is a transducer -a device that
converts energy from one form to another. During the audio playback
process, speakers convert electrical energy sent from the amplifier into
acoustic energy that produces sound. It is interesting to note that
although we've made great advances in speaker design, the basic technology
has not changed since speakers were invented. (Patent Pending) the two
major objectives in the design of the EXCURSION drivers were to improve
motor efficiency and increase linear travel, resulting in loud accurate
bass. To increase the linear travel we had to use a surround and spider
that allowed for longer travel while not restricting full excursion. We
carefully studied the Super wide surrounds available on the market, but
found that although they did increase the linear travel; they also
decreased the valuable cone area. The trade off, less cone area for
greater linear travel, was not acceptable to the Hollywood engineers.
There had to be a better way and we found it.
Fact:
"Larger drivers produce lower frequencies".
The
larger the cone circumference, the more cone surface area. The more cone
area the more air mass that can be displaced for increased Sound Pressure
Levels. In addition larger cone bodies can produce bigger and wider sound
waves for the reproduction of lower frequencies. Unlike our competitors'
oversize surround, Hollywood found a way to maintain the valuable cone
area. The 10" X-1080-D surround maintains a cone surface area of 8.5
inches; while other oversize surround designs have cone areas of 7.0
inches (Similar to that of an 8" woofer.) As show on the (DWS)
illustration, we chose not to use off the shelf parts for our Excursion
speakers. We custom tooled a basket with a larger flange that would allow
us to increase the surround size without decreasing the cone area. Once
you hear one you will understand why the (DWS technology) deserved to be
patented.
Fact.
"Loud accurate bass is a direct function of linear excursion
capabilities. "
We
designed the Double wide surround for the Excursion with well over 2"
inches of linear travel (Over one inch in and one inch out.) The surround
height was also increase by 25%. This caused a problem, no ordinary off
the shelf spider would work with our design. The solution was to design a
custom super high roll, flat progressive spider capable of mirroring the
Excursion capabilities of the Double wide surround. This custom black
spider also helps dissipate power-robbing heat from the voice coil.
By increasing the linear Excursion capabilities, our cone body can travels
further to displaces more air for unbelievable impact and unsurpassed
Sound Pressure Levels that could not be previously achieved by any driver
of its size.
Fact.
"The woofer can not reach maximum Sound Pressure Levels (SPL) if the
motor structure can not control and drive the suspension to the limit.
"
The
Hollywood EXCURSION, EDGE, AND REFERENCE subwoofers use the patented MAFOS
back plate design. Since 1995, the most copied backplate in the industry.
Fact.
"The higher the voice coil temperature, the higher the
resistance."
The physical shape,
thickness and density of the front and back plate affect and reflect the
magnetic flux flow emanating from the ferrite magnet material around the
voice coil. By manipulating these properties synergy is created. The
rounded Ventury design continuously forces air over the voice coil
windings to reduce heat. Moreover, the Ventury tm design adds small
deposits of material to the backplate in a specific radius to help
concentrate the flux flow through the air gap (the space between the top
plate and the pole piece.). The increased smoothness of flux flow
increases the Driver Transduction Constant, or "BL" factor. This
creates an efficient, substantially stronger magnetic structure with
higher power handling capabilities. Furthermore, the MAFOS backplate has a
deep dip cut that allows more voice coil Excursion thorough the magnetic
flux, without impacting the backplate. (Bottoming out)
Fact:
"The more conductive the backplate, the stronger and more focused the
magnetic flux flow is."
Unlike our solid stock
backplates, most extended pole piece backplates are constructed using two
separate pieces of material. This has adverse affects on the voice coils
movement at the joint. The actual material used to construct the front and
back plates is extremely important. For, whenever carbon is introduced
into raw metallic base stock, the percentage of carbon directly affects
the tinsel strength of the material. A higher percentage of carbon equals
a higher crystalline factor and a more brittle material. This practice
"Dilutes" the quality of the stock. The carbon properties do not
react with the flux of the ferrite magnet material, thus they lessening
the "reflective" properties of the front and backplates and
reduce the driver's sensitivity. The car audio industry commonly uses
material with up to 15% carbon. Our MAFOS design uses material with an
average of 5 to 6% and no more than 8% of carbon, so as to improve
sensitivity by up to 3 dB. (An increase of 3 dB is comparable to
increasing amplifier power by 300 %.) The increased electromagnetic
strength and higher efficiency enables our speakers to reach a higher
"BL" factor while using smaller magnet structures and less
power.
With over 2" of linear DWS suspension travel and our
highly efficient MAFOS tm motor design, you can't help but get incredible
show stopping performance in a micro size enclosure. The 10" X-1080 D
works in a 0.4 cubic foot box while the 12" X-1280-D works in a 0.6
cubic foot box.)
